Steps to Clean Your Dog if Sprayed by a Skunk

If your dog has been sprayed by a skunk, it’s important to act quickly to minimize the odor and prevent skin irritation. Here are the steps you can follow to clean your dog at home:

  1. Ventilate the area: If possible, take your dog outside to clean them, or open windows and doors to let fresh air in. This will help dissipate the skunk spray odor. It is in our human nature and instinct to put the dog in the bath tub right away BUT you should not do this.

    1. WHY? Skunk spray is an oil produced by the anal glands of the skunk to defend against predators and contains sulfurous chemicals called thiols or thioacetates. Most thiols bind to proteins in your dog’s skin, causing a persistent odor. Thioacetates aren’t as potent as thiols, but they become thiols when mixed with water, so its not a good idea to t throw your dog in the bath right away! They are readily converted into thiols when they are mixed with water.

  2. Make a cleaning solution: Mix one quart of hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of dish soap. This mixture will effectively neutralize the skunk spray.

  3. Protect your eyes and skin: Wear gloves and goggles to protect yourself from the cleaning solution.

  4. Apply the cleaning solution: Using a cloth or sponge, apply the cleaning solution to your dog's fur, taking care to avoid their eyes, nose, and mouth. Let the solution sit for 5-10 minutes. Don’t use a hydrogen peroxide solution stronger than 3%. Anything stronger will burn your dog.

  5. Rinse thoroughly: Rinse your dog thoroughly with water to remove the cleaning solution. Avoid getting the solution in their eyes, nose, or mouth.

  6. Repeat as needed: If the odor remains, repeat the cleaning process.

  7. Bathe your dog: Give your dog a bath using a gentle, odor-eliminating shampoo to help remove any remaining odor.

  8. Dry your dog: Towel dry or let your dog air dry. If it's cold outside, make sure to keep your dog warm to avoid hypothermia.

  9. Bring your dog to Pawtanicals and get the service: Thera-Clean Micro-bubble bath. This deep cleans the pores and removes as much oil from the dog’s skin as possible. We recommend 1 bath each week for total of 3 weeks will help remove the oder.

By following these steps, you should be able to effectively clean your dog if they get sprayed by a skunk. If the odor persists or if your dog shows signs of skin irritation, contact your veterinarian for further advice.
